Prisoners and illegal immigrants into soldiers

Why not give prisoners an option? We have tons just sitting there rotting in jail cells. Why not give these guys the opportunity to serve in the military? This would really ease our problems with lack of soldiers, and I am sure that the prisoners would love the opportunity. What do you think?

At first it seems like a good idea but what about their criminal intentions? How are you going to ensure they actually fight for the country as they should? Gang members will go after other gang members on the same side if given the chance and especially equipped with an assault rife. What I am saying is you can't trust them.

Kind of what I was thinking. Also, you would have criminals being trained to kill and learn tactics to take back to the streets. I watched something on tv, it may have been gangland, where gang members are joining the military just to get combat training and then teach the gang members when they are done with their service.

Well there is always that risk, but its not like it's going to just be solid prisoners, there will still be leaders etc. Alot of them will from "brotherhoods" from being in a group and achieving tasks etc. They can be deployed on the front lines and ya you are going to have a certain percentage that may try to run etc. But you could have a system where if they messed up then they go back. I think most men would jump at the opportunity to go.

There certainly needs to be a better use of them though instead of letting them work out and watch tv all day.

The military would probably be just what many of these people need. There is always the risk of flight or other conflict, however most of these would be weeded out during basic training, and sent right back. Even if not military service, a return to days of the chain gang and having prisoners do manual labor that would be beneficial to the public good would be outstanding in my mind.

I agree those men love to get outdoors in the sunshine etc. Why can't they do city work and cut back on our tax dollars?

Higher unemployment rate for non criminals.

There is always garbage to be picked up, rural ditches to be mowed, other improvements that simply need man power. Does not mean there has to be any cut backs. Right now in my community the public library is moving to another building, what a perfect chore for these type of people to move books, furniture and other stuff for good of the public rather than watching tv and laying around all day.

Two negatives don't make a positive.

Its difficult to answer because you didn't qualify which prisoners. I don't think it would work. Depending on the case, a judge has, in the past, been able to give the option of joining the armed service as opposed to jail time. *shrug* Garbage in garbage out. You can't make a good soldier out of an unwilling person. OTOH you can put a cold blooded killer in a uniform, but you can also put lipstick on a pig.

Give it time, robots will ease the lack of soldiers. Otherwise, the free game that comes with the xbox 1080 will actually control drone planes in real world combat.

I do agree that something should be done so that less people end up in prison, but I think we need to find out what makes good people do bad things and stop that. Along with stopping bad people from polluting the gene pool.

I got this idea from the book I am currently reading. It's back in the "knights" era. But basically the get all the bad people out of the dungeons to join "The Black". It's a brotherhood where they have to take guard on this wall. When they enter it, it doesn't matter how severe the crime was it's all forgotten, your old ways are gone, the rest of your life is devoted to "The Black". They will train you etc. But if you try to leave they will hunt you down and behead you. This is the oath they all take. Their lives are dedicated you leave and you die. The same philosophy could be put in effect. Besides most of them would be proud and make sure the rest keep in shape. I actually think it would work. As long as they knew their life was on the line most would straighten out.

Somewhat similar, @jmanz was telling me from a podcast that he was listening to, that some think that is why they are letting in so many illegal immigrants right now. To become their own personal army if need be. I had never really thought about it before, but it is an interesting theory.

That was the thought of Bret Weinstein...By the way, if you want a good example of how Wikipedia tries to sway public opinion, look at his wiki page. Especially in the covid/hiv sections... "Mr. Rogan and Mr. Weinstein do their listeners a disservice in disseminating false information"

Wikipedia is a government funded program, they can say otherwise, but any place that tries to be a universal information tool, is funded in the background but the government. I think they had good intentions originally, but it's hard to pass up financing.
