Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Discussion: Digital Currencies and Mining

Bitcoin is interesting to me from a technology stand point with all of the bit mining and either using old PCs, or high end video cards. But I wonder what it says about society that we had to use tech to create an artificial currency to be used....um....how am I supposed to use this again?

Most of the uses are for illegal purposes at the moment. But there are some sites starting to use it as a legal currency to pay for legit things.

Well that was fast in the same day they have now hopped up to almost $600.

These are so inconsistent without a lot of control. Who knows where it gets it's pricing? Bitcoins are acting a lot like High Interest Yield programs. I used to do them with a lot of success 8 or so years ago. While they were not illegal, they technically were border line. It's basically get in and get out at your own expense, operating much like a pyramid scheme.

I have heard the sudden raise is due alot to the amount of publicity they are getting lately in the media. The return of the silk road, and also the crytolocker virus making it's rounds since they accept bitcoins and ransom payments.

What is stopping a large company or government entity from using resources to mine for bitcoins? Isn't this what the Google Barge is for? Bitcoin mining sounded neat, but it seemed you would need a high toned PC to get anywhere, and that, from a participation point, is where I lost interest. Maybe is it becomes accepted on an open market it might become interesting again. *shrug* I guess you need physical money to pay for equip to make digital money? *shrug*

Wow Bitcoins were the number one searched term for a day, that's quite impressive.
