Is college a scam?

With the recent growth of AI, there has been some talk on how this could change college.  It might bring to surface how wasteful many college degrees are, and bring back more focus on trade school degrees.  Of course this may take some time, but it seems crazy that a person who want to further their education has to go in deep debt to pay of the overhead of college's non teaching staff.  Then that person goes out in the workforce with no practicality skills to the real world.

And even crazier, maybe too much to discuss in this topic, is that many teaching jobs have been deemed highly replaceable by AI.  Think about it, most teachers in the past decades have been forced to follow a standard cookie cutter style with standardized tests that doesn't encourage critical thinking, but learning by repetitive cramming.  AI can teach people this way, but hopefully we don't go this path, and more towards useful 2 year trade school or associates degrees.

I wonder if future classes will not have a teacher but just a whiteboard that teaches?

As far as trades go 100% agree, you can make so much. I just look at the need around here. If you're a welder/fabricator, a plumber, electrician, concrete guy, or home builder, there is more work than men around here.

I also firmly believe that a trades person should not have to slave away at their job to make ends meet or work in terrible conditions.  Before technology, society most were in the trades, really had no choice to put forth effort to live, yet there was still suffering and problems, just in different forms.

I think as long as society looks up to people with lots of money, we will still have lots of problems which AI won't solve, who will mainly control AI, the fox of course.  This becomes dystopian thinking, but the most likely situation.  Look at all the effort is put to just make money for corporations instead of putting into more useful ways or or good quality products.

good quality products.
Ha good luck here, products are purposely manufactured as cheap as possible, or as low quality as possible. They purposely do this since there is more money in repair or you being a repeat buyer. To me computers are the best example of this.

We had a new kid start today. I was talking with him and he came here from Wyoming to go to college. I was asking him what he was taking. He said "ya I won't be going back after this semester". He told me that it's just too expensive, and all his friends are stopping going and entering trades because they are finding the trades are paying more and no one cares about college credentials anymore. It was interesting and I thought about this thread.

Funny how things go in cycles. 20 years ago nobody wanted to go into trades and they didn't pay well. Now it comes back around.
