Using radio waves to trigger something across the country?

This one still has me guessing lately, but I have a new thought. What happens if something happened to the internet or even power grid for example? Say you wake up one day and nothing is working, not the internet, not your cell phone etc. (Which seems to be happening a lot lately). Well, what would you do to find out what is going on in the world, or what's happening? This is especially true in rural areas. You would get out your old AM/FM radios and try to tune into a station to hear what is happening. What happens if they own all of these, well just like old Russia/China times, they can broadcast propaganda and you won't really know what is going on out there. So, it's almost like they are preparing for something. It doesn't seem so farfetched does it?
