Today, EA revealed EA Access, an Xbox One-exclusive subscription service that grants players access to EA's so-called Vault.Subscribing to EA Access will cost $4.99 a month (or $30 a year), and since the program is technically in beta, only four games will initially be available: FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4, "with more titles being added soon."

Hmm.... is this the way AAA studios will go. Subscription based access to their games?

I don't know if I want to see this succeed or fail...

I know of those 4 games, I have Peggle 2 (fun game) and don't care too much about the others. For a sports gamer it's a good deal though. $30 a year is cheaper than buying Madden each year anyway, and you get access to other games (assuming you get the new game right away when it comes out)

I think it all depends on the studio. But ya this may become the future.

I'd rather see it implemented at the ecosystem level (Xbox, PS, Steam) so that it was a consistent experience across everything. Good or bad at least it would be consistent and one fee. This opens the door for EA to charge X, Activision charges Y. With EA you get some games, but ABC is restricted and with Activision you get all games, but only after they are a year old or something. Obviously I'm making this all up and activision has said anything about any kind of program, but you get the idea...

I see Sony is saying this offers no value, and saying that EA approached them but turned it down.

I'm still unsure what I think of it. For $5 a month I don't know if I'd want it, but at $30 a year, it might cause me to try things like Madden or FIFA that I wouldn't play otherwise. Probably not a lot, but I could play them once they were available (not at launch). Currently it would mean I could play Battlefield 4, wonder if they've fixed all the shit bugs they had?

The 10% discount on new games and the early access would be nice bonuses, but it would take 5 full price purchases to get your $30 back, but then the vault access comes into that and I guess could make it less.

Anyway, I'm thinking I may give it a shot for a year when available. Wouldn't be the worst $30 I ever spent.

I liked how you said it should be machine based. I would be fine with that. But there are alot of people that don't like EA. to some it may be a benefit like the "Battlefield" series. Anyways we will see how it works, almost reminds me of that season pass crap.

I would say that it's better than season pass, since it gets you access to multiple games, but DLC is here to stay, so you may as well get used to that. At least season passes generally get you all a games DLC for a discounted price.

Speaking of DLC, while it gets you BF4, it does not include the DLC for BF4. So, they start giving away their old games essentially, and selling DLC to those that like a certain old game enough to want it.

Really not much different than the current PS+ of Games with Gold stuff, where you get a game free, as long as you subscribe, and depending on the game there may be DLC you would choose to purchase to add to that "free" game.

Just got an email that this is now available.

I tried it out a little bit early. $30 for a year, but I was able to download Battlefield (still would've been $60 to purchase) and Madden / FIFA. Haven't tried the latter couple games, but for $30 I was able to get at least one game I wanted to try out and they'll add others over time. Peggle 2 is also available , but I already own that.

First Victim of EA Early Access: MADDEN NFL 15.

You'll only be able to play Madden NFL 15 before its Aug. 26 launch if you own an Xbox One and subscribe to EA Access. There will be no publicly available demo, a representative for publisher Electronic Arts confirmed to Polygon today. That bucks a trend nearly a decade long. EA has released a downloadable demo on consoles for every Madden title since Madden NFL 06 in 2005, although that game's trial came out shortly after the title itself launched alongside the Xbox 360. A playable Madden demo is traditionally available approximately two weeks prior to release.Asked to provide details on why there won't be a Madden 15 demo, the EA spokesperson declined to clarify. But it's worth noting that last month, EA announced an Xbox One-exclusive subscription service called EA Access. The program, which costs $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, includes up to five days of pre-release access to upcoming EA titles.

Figures, trying to drive people toward the access program. Dumb, but I don't think it's a terrible value. Better value than a lot of subscription based games *cough* *cough*

Then again, who has never played a Madden game (other than me). It's a football game, most people that enjoy them buy every year or every other year. How many play the demo? If their sales were low enough I bet they'd offer a trial eventually, but what are the chances of that....
