A USB modchip for the PS3 has emerged from the mists this morning, purporting to allow the dumping of games onto nearby storage -- the console's internal HDD and external drives are both a-ok -- as well as the subsequent playing of said games without the need for the original disc. Could it be the backup/piracy nirvana Sony loyalists have been awaiting for so long? Well, there's a video showing the little USB device apparently working, and the PSX-Scene team say they have personally verified that it does what it claims to do.

Interesting but I am worried about what happens when Sony catches you using it.

Can you load PS3 games to the hard drive prior to this? I don't have a PS3, but it seems if you just unplug the usb stick you are back to normal with the exception of the games stored on the HDD.This "external drive" mentioned above? Is that a proprietary Sony product or any usb drive?
Its interesting that things have gone from a kid dismantling a PS3 and soldering for ring access to this "acquired" USB test dongle. *shrug*

The PS3 will NOT let you store on the HDD. The xbox has this functionality, BUT you must put the disk in to play stored games. The only thing that breaks that on either system is DLC for which it is obviously on the HDD and doesn't have a disc. The external drive would be any usb drive. Again, functionality the xbox has, but limited to pen drives up to 16 GB in size, no HDD allowed
