At these prices, yes.
I tried premium last time, and did not get any better fuel economy. There's several variables including temperature and driving conditions, but the two comparisons I had were very similar, and no noticeable difference in gas mileage. In the long run, better fuel might not gunk things up as much, but that could depend on other factors too.
I think that’s the theory. I don’t think mid grade, or premium has any less ethanol than the regular. But since it’s higher octane, it’s supposed to burn cleaner and burn hotter and theoretically burn off more ethanol, and keep your engine cleaner. Or so I have heard.
Figuring out differences in fuel mileage is really hard because of temp, winds, etc like you mentioned. I haven't noticed much difference myself in that regard. The only difference I've noticed is that the eco-boost engine in our specific vehicle (SUV) seems to run smoother on higher octane than with the ethanol blend. It could be total coincidence but there are some differences I've noticed since changing.
