The rise of Russia

Russian Assassin Hunting the Double Agent Who Betrayed Anna Chapman

An unnamed, high-ranking government official suggested to Moscow's Kommersant paper that a "Mercader" had been sent after Shcherbakov, apparently referring to Ramón Mercader, the Spanish communist who assassinated Leon Trotsky in 1940. When asked about the Kommersant report, a spokesperson for Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service said "We have no comment on this and will not have any."

Looks like they are doing pretty good still. The big boys come at the end.

Russia may target US missile shield

Medvedev: Russia may target US missile shieldBy VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, Associated Press – 28 minutes agoMOSCOW (AP) — Russia's president threatened on Wednesday to deploy missiles to target the U.S. missile shield in Europe if Washington fails to assuage Moscow's concerns about its plans, a harsh warning that reflected deep cracks in U.S.-Russian ties despite President Barack Obama's efforts to "reset" relations with the Kremlin.
Dmitry Medvedev said he still hopes for a deal with the U.S. on missile defense, but he strongly accused Washington and its NATO allies of ignoring Russia's worries. He said that Russia will have to take military countermeasures if the U.S. continues to build the shield without legal guarantees that it will not be aimed against Russia.

The U.S. has repeatedly assured Russia that its proposed missile defense system wouldn't be directed against Russia's nuclear forces, and it did that again Wednesday.

"I do think it's worth reiterating that the European missile defense system that we've been working very hard on with our allies and with Russia over the last few years is not aimed at Russia," said Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman. "It is ... designed to help deter and defeat the ballistic missile threat to Europe and to our allies from Iran."

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said the U.S. will continue to seek Russia's cooperation, but that the U.S. missile defense plan in Europe "is going well and we see no basis for threats to withdraw from it."

Russia Is Massing Troops On Iran’s Northern Border And Waiting For A Western Attack

The Russian military anticipates that an attack will occur on Iran by the summer and has developed an action plan to move Russian troops through neighboring Georgia to stage in Armenia, which borders on the Islamic republic, according to informed Russian sources.Russian Security Council head Viktor Ozerov said that Russian General Military Headquarters has prepared an action plan in the event of an attack on Iran.
Dmitry Rogozin, who recently was the Russian ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, warned against an attack on Iran.

“Iran is our neighbor,â€ Rogozin said. “If Iran is involved in any military action, it’s a direct threat to our security.â€ Rogozin now is the deputy Russian prime minister and is regarded as anti-Western. He oversees Russia’s defense sector.

Russian Defense Ministry sources say that the Russian military doesn’t believe that Israel has sufficient military assets to defeat Iranian defenses and further believes that U.S. military action will be necessary.

The implication of preparing to move Russian troops not only is to protect its own vital regional interests but possibly to assist Iran in the event of such an attack. Sources add that a Russian military buildup in the region could result in the Russian military potentially engaging Israeli forces, U.S. forces, or both.

Informed sources say that the Russians have warned of “unpredictable consequencesâ€ in the event Iran is attacked, with some Russians saying that the Russian military will take part in the possible war because it would threaten its vital interests in the region.

Watching CNN. They have a story about a Russian Naval warship "popping up" in Havana.

I'll never get to smoke a Cuban at this rate!

Russia is taking over Crimea too. Crimea is currently part of Ukraine and a peninsula bordering the black sea. I was interested in going there, but doesn't look good now.

Found it:

A Russian Vishnya class warship docked in Havana on Wednesday without explanation from Communist Cuba or its state media. The Viktor Leonov CCB-175 boat measures 300 feet long, 50 feet wide and holds a crew of around 200.Built in the 1980s for the Soviet Navy and deployed within the Russian fleet, Vishnya class ships are used for gathering intelligence. The ship is reportedly armed with 30mm guns and anti-aircraft missiles.
Neither Cuban authorities nor state media have mentioned the ship's visit, unlike previous tours by Russian warships. Its visit comes as Venezuela, Havana's current isolated economic and political patron, is facing unprecedented violent protests against President Nicolas Maduro's government.

Yes, it's a nice strategic and economical location. Also it has more temperate weather on the coasts. Most people are Russian there, so I wouldn't be surprised it goes to Russia.
