What's new

Virtual reality and headsets

I see stuff like this being the future. Being able to play board games with people with the same interests across the globe, like you are actually there with AR.

So I got my Meta Quest at lunch, where to begin? I really only got it setup and updated and ran out of time. But the menus floating in VR? 🤯 not using the controllers and just your hand to grab on displays and move them around 🤯. Watching a YouTube video and really no longer needing a tv in your house, any size you want 🤯 But wait, when you enter a virtual landscape

Ya I don't know what to say, this is some black magic wizard stuff. It really is the future. I haven't even played a game yet either. My mind is just blown by the floating AR menus lol. Anyways tonight will be fun. I can't help what to think ten years from now. I also lost track of all the time at lunch, my wife came home and I was in some virtual landscape. I now see what @jthock was talking about losing touch with reality. It's like you have entered the matrix. After I took them off, I am now wondering if this reality is even real or if I am just using an advanced version of the glasses. It's like you're coming out of a dream into another dream.

Exactly what I experienced when I got ours and set it up for son. Before I was like how amazing can it really be but that changed quick when actually using it as it's just awesome.

So I downloaded Batman last night, it was my first real gaming test. In all my years of gaming I have never experienced anything like that before. It starts you out in an apartment, and you jist keep laughing because it feels like you are actually there. Then I looked at my hand and they look like I am wearing the batsuit. I sat there for probably like 10 minutes just laughing and looking at my hands. I didn’t get to deep into the game but even the heights make it feel like you high up and I’m scared of heights and it gave me the same feeling. @C Pav wss right, I’ve never experienced anything like it. It’s the future of gaming and productivity.

I also tried another game called - Drums Rock and it is basically guitar hero, but with drums. I haven’t had that much fun since guitar hero. (I miss those days). It has a free 15 minute trial if you want to try it out for those of you that have a Meta Quest. It’s an instant purchase for me.

Beat Saber from what I hear the is the must play/have rythum game. THere is also a golf game many rave about. For free games to play with multiple people I guess Animal Company and Gorilla Tag ore the top ones.

@C Pav do me a favor and just try the demo for Drums Rock, and let me know what you think. It's just like Guitar Hero.

I played Elite Dangerous and had to finally tell myself never again. It was just too much... altogether. My computer became my space station and oculus was my escape. Sounds corny but I just can't use VR anymore for my own sanity. I don't think it's inherently evil. It's a device that people made. Just like too much of anything can be bad but moreso if you already have problems. Elite Dangerous was my drug, though. Worse than wow ever was because it stimulated my senses way more than usual. I was gone for a while man...

I remember you telling us in an earlier post, and I never fully believed it until I got a Meta Quest 3, now I can honestly believe you. It bends the perception of your whole reality. Like I said, it's like some sort of black magic tomfoolery.

Picked up Walk the Plank at lunch, man what a trip, I couldn't even do it. The elevator door opened and I couldn't bring myself to get out of it. MY wife tried it and acted all cool, but then fell off and now she is sick to her stomach.

Man, the more I use this thing, it's not right. I mean you're going to lose touch with reality. I just fired up Alyx Half Life 2, because I wanted to try the Stream link, and that on another level as well. I only played maybe 10 minutes, and the world, the graphics. I was also trying out the streaming over the network and not using the USB-C cable and it seemed to work fine on my network. I am telling you this isn't right. Like sitting here, just typing this after only ten minutes I feel like I just came from a real world into another real word. It's like waking from a dream and realizing this is a dream and waiting to a wake up from like @C Pav said, until you experience it yourself you don't know what it's really like.

agreed made me feel weird, had a few other problems that could have made it worse too

Symptoms of damage to the vestibulocochlear nerve include:
Wikipedia+3
  • Hearing loss (in some cases)
  • Vertigo or dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Imbalance or loss of equilibrium
  • Nystagmus (fluttering eye movements)
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • False sense of motion or spinning
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Motion sickness

that's all of what I was experiencing, and it wasn't all from the device, though. Moving from different areas with different elevations, stress-related factors, emotional stuff, as well as an inner ear infection all at once lol

I went nuts for a little bit, felt like dying and going to hell.

I would have needed to see a specialist; audiologist or something to deal with it.. expensive

Oh I also had impacted wisdom teeth that are completely sideways 😬 we couldn't afford to get em removed because we were living in MT. The doc here wouldn't remove em either because it's way harder to remove & heal em when you get older.. all of that & more added up at once.. scared me worse than I would like to admit

Diplacusis is a condition where a person hears a single sound as two distinct sounds, resulting in a "double hearing" effect.

^basically that with long-term tinnitus

Here is my update from today. I bought some new silicon hand knuckle straps for it. I highly recommend them; they are way more secure on your hands now and you can let go with your fingers.

I purchased two games today the fishing VR game and the Miniature golf game.

The fishing game is great so relaxing and so realistic on everything, it feels like you are actually there. Just you the lake, or the beach or any other of the multiple places with the native sounds.

The miniature golf is so much fun, tons of courses and crazy shots. The ball and putter effects are spot on.

I wish the battery lasted longer, and I am always worrying about scratching the lenses, besides that it is a blast. My sister swung by and she tried it, and her mind was blown as well.

I did order a pair of prescription lenses for my Meta this morning. I am to scared of scratching my lenses with mine.

Do you have any problems with it? I have heard about aftermarket battery packs bricking and burning up the usb-c ports.
I don't have it and not really planning to. I know I read both good and bad but that one seems to be the one to get. Not sure if it has the issues you mentioend compared to some others but not really wanting to take the chance.

I think you are alright as long as you are using a power bank that at least pushes 18.8 watts, it seems like the people that run into the problems are people that are using a power bank that pumps out too little. I am like you. I just plan on using the official built-in charger for the moment. Alot of people are using a good quality power bank and just put in in their pants pocket or shirt pocket and run a cable up to their port.

At this rate I am thinking about purchasing a Meta Quest 3s as well since my kids want to play it so badly. My youngest I don't think it's good or she is ready for it since they recommend that you have to be at least 10+ years old to use it. But my oldest all of her friends have it and she keeps wanting to play it, so I am considering buying the cheaper one for her. I think it would be fun to have to play miniature golf with her as well. I just don't want to worry about scratched lenses at the expensive price point.

Meta has good support, I couldn't purchase their extended warranty off their site, but the guy on chat fixed it for me, and I go you don't happen to have any coupon codes for games do you, and he sent me a couple and added a $10 store credit to my account for my next purchase, pretty great support!
