I'm thinking of going the manual reel mower route for the majority of cutting, and use the power one as a back up.

There is nothing wrong with them, keep your blades sharpened and they actually cut nicely. Just go old school and use a scythe.

 
Got the lawn mowed for the first time of the season last night. The Honda purred nicely. A little later than usual here, has been cool and wet.

Took my rider out for the first-time last night. I wanted to cut it fast. I did a crappy job but busted the whole thing out in an hour and a half that would normally take me two nights and 3 hours each. I had the peddle to the metal.

We have had quite a few hot days lately, and while I am watering non stop, my grass has just been holding steady and not growing, where just a few weeks ago it was almost twice a week.

 
Grass is getting a second wind here after a hot, dry summer. Had a few nice rains lately.

 
I was going to mow tonight but then we kept having these little pop up rain showers. Meh, tomorrow I guess.

 
I put away all my hoses yesterday, and sprinklers. Will blow out my water lines here probably this week. I have about one last mow, which I will cut short and then that's it for me for the Winter. Will dump the oil as well.
 
I did my final mower before Winter this weekend. I am holding off changing my oil in my new Honda for now. I was impressed by how it sucked up the leaves. So, I am going to hold out until my leaves really drop and use it as a vacuum and then change the oil later.
 
We are back boys! First mow of the year tonight. Looks like it was a little earlier this year for me than it was last year. Mower ran well, new air filter, oil change, and sharpened blades.

Funny story about that. I did take to a place to sharpen the blades for me but they goofed up and gave it the works. New spark plug too. The guy (owner) felt bad that he goofed and give me all that just for the price of sharpening blades.

 
Lmao, When I first read your post I thought you meant they over sharpened the blades and whittled them down to nothing.

 
Well mowed my first time this year. I didn't really need to do it, but just had one spot that grows taller than the rest and wanted to knock it down. I only did my side yard. I also wanted to make sure my mower was ready, but I was coming out of the shed with a fresh oil change from last season and she purred like a kitten. 

At least I am not running over my vibration dampeners like inexperienced mowers. 🥴

@nodle is out there mowing in 30 degrees. "Oh I think the grass grew a centimeter, spring is here! Time to mow."
