Excited! :)

Here's the vital information:

  • It will be on PS4 and Xbox One

  • Harmonix intends it to be fully backwards-compatible with ALL plastic instruments you may have already bought back in the mid-late '00s, and is working with Microsoft and Sony to make this a reality

  • All the DLC you bought for last-gen versions of Rock Band will be carried over (again, depending on the platform holders' co-operation)

  • There will be new instruments to buy if you want to buy them, and people who pre-order them will get exclusive colours

  • The new controllers will be largely similar in size and shape to the old ones, as Harmonix still has a relationship with Fender, but they will be identical in functionality: no new bells and whistles

  • It's no longer being published by EA – instead, Harmonix is partnering with Mad Catz both to manufacture the new instruments and to distribute the boxed game

  • Rock Band 4 is intended to be a platform that lasts for years rather than the first step in another sequence of yearly releases. It will be continuously updated with new songs, modes, and anything else the community wants

  • It will be out during summer

I saw this, but have heard varying reports:

1) instruments may or may not be compatible. I know they intend to - but that doesn't mean they'll be able to at this point

2) Not ALL the songs you had - maybe all the DLC, but sounds like songs from RB3 and RB: Beatles will not be able to transfer due to licensing - technically I suppose these are not DLC songs, but RB and RB2 both eventually allowed exporting so you could play (almost actually) all of the songs from those in RB3.

Also, specifically for @nodle - did you have this on PS3 or the 360? Your purchases would only carry over to the next gen console within the same family, so if you had it on 360, you'd need to start your library over or get the X1

Nope mine was on the PS3 so I am good. I'm not surprised about the instruments being compatible, I really didn't expect them to be. If they can't transfer some artist then they should at least give you store credit.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.. Yeah right. It would be great, but you bought the DLC for the old platform. The fact they will try to give it back to you on a new platform is awesome, but they'll never give you a credit for the stuff you bought for another platform, which by purchasing you agreed to terms that it was for that platform only, just because someone decides not to let them license it to move it to the new platform

I know but we can all hope. :)

I have exactly 0 hope that it would ever happen. I'm just happy they say I can get most of what I had before without buying it again. In all honesty though, if I couldn't use previous DLC, I probably wouldn't buy it until a ways down the road - probably the same with plastic instruments. They at least said they don't plan this to be the start of having RB5, 6, 7, etc. They plan to just release a game and then add more to it over time - I'm sure more paid DLC to add songs, game modes, etc, but they gotta get money to pay the bills and developers...

The more I think about this the more excited I am. I really miss blaring my speakers. I wonder though, what really can they improve besides graphics?

I don't think they intend to improve much - besides why does RB really need any better graphics than it ever had.

New consoles = new opportunity to get people to purchase a game again - I don't expect much of any changes, just some new songs and familiar gameplay
