The shaving thread

I was thinking about this when I was shaving this morning. I have this bad habit of pressing the razor against my skin, when it should just be floating or riding on your skin. Anyone else do this as well?

Guess I never paid attention but a little pressure probably needs to be applied. Unless you are over doing it?

I just use electric beard trimmer, gets it close enough. I always get irritated skin when I use regular blades, so I never do.

I used to get skin irritation as well. Mine has gone away mostly. One thing that helps is don't shave every day. If you can stretch out shaving here and there it gives your skin some relief. Also, a nice sharp razor, not dull makes a difference as well. Also, a good balm aftershave, not alcohol style aftershave can make a huge difference, probably the biggest difference of all.

Anyone else just gets burnt out having to shave all the time? I remember being about 15 and couldn't wait to shave. I would even try to shave my peach fuzz, because I thought I was cool. Fast forward to the present day and time, and it's such a pain.

@C Pav are you still big into old fashioned shaving? I always respected that you got into that. I was considering breaking out my old school stuff as well again.

@jmanz I pulled out some of my old beard oil tonight, and I couldn't smell it anymore, just smelled like castor oil. I wonder if it has lost it's smell, it's probably been like 6 years now.

Yep but due to time I only shave once a week now usually for church. Still does a great shave, 3 passes, with that growth. Was on vacation the past few days and didn't go to church Sunday so shaved this morning.

I am working on using up a bunch of old samples I bought when I went crazy buying. This morning was from Oz Shaving Company, I think (no longer in bsuiness it seems) and called Oil Can. I bought the sample of soap, pre shave oil and after shave. I actually bought the sample of every scent they had way back. Smells pretty good but not a good describer. Not overly perfumy and more a classic barbershop type scent. Razor I use is my favorite Rockwell 6S. Has different heads to adjust how aggressive. I get a great shave with 3 so keep it at that. The blade I can't recall what I have in now as I have a huge bunch of 5 blade sample packages.

You got me curious so I took a whiff of the 1912 and "Cool" that I had left...definitely lost some punch.

I am glad it's not just me, I mean they are sealed but the smells seem gone. I opened multiple and I couldn't smell anything; I think I am going to just toss them out. I have like 30 😬

@C Pav I will probably need to get another boar brush, I don't know until I look at my supplies, but what do you recommend for soap? I am sure all of my stuff is old by now.

I have a few brushes. 2 Sythetic and 1 boar. Never liked the boar much, not bad just a bit more "rough" and coarse, so my favorite is my synthetic. Might have another but maybe not.

For soaps the top brands are Barrister and Mann, Sterling Soap (my personal favorite) and a few others. I have SO MUCH I cycle through. Too much in fact. Noble Otter is another good company. Ariana and Evans another company that gets mentioned.

I almost want to venture into the straight razor scene but so much more expensive, time consuming, care of blade and technique involved.

I was just looking on Amazon at Soap, was looking between these two, heard anything good?

Proraso
Cella Milano

Both good.

Have not used Proraso myself yet but get's mentioned. Think they have a few different colors/scents.

I have and have used Cella. Also good and would give a try. I have the whole set from pre shave cream, soap to after shave, cream and the whole line that goes with it. I see they now have an aloe vera one now.

Thanks, I think I am going to cancel my Harry's and get back into this stuff, thanks again.

What do you think of that Viking Blades brand? It seems like their safety razors are fairly cheap and people like them.

*Edit I just ordered one, for $22 it’s a no brainer. Also it seems years back when I looked at these they were super expensive, it seems like the market is flooded and the prices are cheap.
