Looked for a more "minimum wage" only related thread for a rant, but I hate the idea of raising the minimum wage.  Minimum wage is for jobs that HS kids and people wanting to work part time should get paid.  Raising the wage has a number of crappy effects:

  1. Lazy bob that just goes to get some lame job will make as much as semi-professionals doing crummy types of jobs (lazy bastards start making as much as hard workers)
     
     
     
  2. Fewer jobs - many employers will find ways to operate as efficiently with fewer workers to offset costs
     
     
     
  3. My pay effectively goes down - I went to school, worked to get experience, started off and worked up a ways to get where I am - for every extra buck minimum wage workers make I effectively make a buck less eventually.  The economy will adjust to the new base pay, products will cost more, because it will cost companies more to produce, etc.  This may not apply to all products, but a lot of services, etc will go up in cost.  Products related to those go up in cost, my pay won't change because it's above minimum wage and now the amount I make doesn't go as far.
     
     
     



Getting by on minimum wage IS tough - but it isn't supposed to be easy to get by on minimum wage.  People should be striving to get out of those types of jobs, not expecting to have to be paid enough to live comfortably and have "fun money" as well.  If your goal in life is to work for minimum wage, living in a run down place for most of your monthly pay check and living on cheap foods should be expected.  You should be able to have luxury items like internet, games, raise kids, etc.  If you want more than that, get responsible, get an education, find a better job and then you can have a nicer place and nice things.  Nothing drives me nuts more than people that just think they should be able to do whatever the hell they want and a comfortable living is their right.  I know a number of folks that have no issue going and blowing all of a check on frivolous things before bothering to make sure bills are paid for the month.

The pursuit of a comfortable lifestyle is your right, having it handed to you isn't.

Very well said.  This country is quickly turning into a system where lazy people are getting stuff handed to them, sucking our resources.  The problem too is that they won't be the minority soon and since they have voting rights, they will elect socialist type people into office.
