Windows 8 OS

Funny story, my boss told me today that he picked up two Surface tablets when he was at the Microsoft store. He said he hated them so much he gave them to his kids.
This is a textbook case of child abuse. He would have been much happier with the Leappad2.

Really, have you tried Windows 8, have you used a surface? Then again, I suppose you're almost right, if someone is too dumb to understand how to use Windows 8 and like it then something like the leap pad 2 is probably more their speed.

Windows 8 got pummeled today by analysts, who cited it as a major factor in tepid PC growth. The launch of a new Microsoft operating system rarely, if ever, goes smoothly. But Windows 8 is having an especially bumpy takeoff. The first reason Deutsche Bank listed today for cutting its PC estimates this quarter was a "lackluster initial uptake of Windows 8," in a research note from analyst Chris Whitmore.

After citing the impact of amorphous factors like "macro weakness" and the "fiscal cliff," Whitmore continues:

As in past cycles we expect the introduction of a new Microsoft OS to spur an increase in PC demand. However...we believe Win8 will have a more muted impact than prior cycles for a several reasons: 1) Win8 reviews are mixed due to a confusing UI; 2) there is a lack of Enterprise interest in Window 8; 3) tablet form factor complicates positioning (Win8 vs. Windows RT), 4) continued substitution of PCs by iPads/tablets 4).

Windows 8's "confusing UI", aka user interface, is becoming a theme for analysts. Usability expert Jakob Nielsen said essentially the same thing today in a report.

And Topeka Capital Markets chimed in, saying Windows 8 orders have been weak.

"Much lower than...PC makers originally expected a few months ago," according to Topeka analyst Brian White.

Computerworld, which has tracked usage patterns of Windows 8 in the months leading up to, and including, the launch, found that the new operating system "is being run by less than a fifth as many people as ran Windows 7 in the same months before its debut."

Well that didn't take to long. Microsoft is already working on their next OS codename "Windows Blue".http://theverge.com/2012/11/28/3693368/windows-blue-update-low-cost
Of course they're already working on the next version.... Do you really think they ever stop working on next versions? It's not like they released Win 7 and then 1.5 years later started working on Win 8. By the time most people could get Windows 7 there were probably already a ton of hours into development on Win 8. You could write an article today that says they are working on the predecessor to this "Blue" in the arcile and you'd probably be right

Actually this probably will need its own thread but that is actually my idea for the next windows.

NPD research published some bad news for Microsoft yesterday.

  • Despite releasing an entirely new operating system on October 22 of this year, Windows PC sales shrank 21 percent between 10/21 and 11/17 versus the same period last year.

  • Windows 8 tablet sales during that period were "almost nonexistent" – just 1 percent of all Windows 8 sales.

Windows 8 falls even behind Vista.

According to Net Applications, Windows 8's online presence has actually fallen to below that of Vista's at the same length of time after release, just two months on the market. On December 22, W8's usage share was sitting at 1.6% of all Windows PCs, up from 1.2% in November. However, in the same period, Vista was sitting at 2.2%, up from around 1% the month before. This is an abysmal result and compares very poorly with Windows 7's 6%+ share after the same two months on the market. It's possible that Christmas sales may redress this balance, but it seems unlikely.

So my sister just bought a new Laptop with Windows 8 on it. First thing I did was buy her Start8 for it. I may have to break out one of my copies and load it up so I can tell her how to do stuff. Before The Start8 got installed I couldn't even tell her how to do a shutdown/restart lol.

Windows 8 gains 3.5% market share in last two months.

In the last two months, Microsoft's newest OS has added 3.5 points to its share of all computing devices powered by WindowsComputerworld - Windows 8 powered almost 10% of all devices running Microsoft's OSes last month, even as its uptake pace slowed, according to analytics company Net Applications today.Meanwhile, Windows XP's decline continued as customers, prodded by the upcoming April 2014 support deadline, again ditched the veteran operating system in droves.

Windows 8's user share of all computing devices running Windows, a tally that includes Windows 8.1, the update slated to ship in two weeks, jumped to 9.8% in September, Net Applications said. The 1.4-point gain was down from the record one-month increase set in August, but nearly double the OS's 12-month average.

The August-September surge of Windows 8 may have been driven by sharp back-to-school sales of touch-based notebooks, which accounted for a quarter of all sales from June 30 through Sept. 7, the NPD Group said last week.

About one out of 10 devices running Windows 8 ran the Windows 8.1 upgrade last month, said Net Applications. Microsoft launched a public preview of Windows 8.1, the restart to the problem- and perception-plagued OS, in June. The update will hit the Windows Store, where it can be downloaded by current users, on Oct. 17, and hit retail on Oct. 18, when many of Microsoft's OEM (original equipment manufacturers) partners are expected to unveil and start selling new hardware.

Windows 8 also increased its lead over Windows Vista, the oft-derided flop from 2007, when each OS's share was compared 11 months after launch. At that point in its release cycle, Vista accounted for 8.5% of all Windows PCs. The gap between Vista and Windows 8 -- 1.1 percentage points in August -- widened in September to 1.3 points.

Windows 8 will certainly pass the 10% mark of all Windows PCs this month.

Part of the rise of Windows 8 must also be credited to the decline of Windows XP, the 12-year-old operating system slated to drop off Microsoft's support radar next April.

I thought I would bump this. I did get an .iso for Windows 8.1 and loaded it on my gaming machine. I still don't like the OS, but since all I do is play WoW on it, it works for me. But I will say one thing. That start up time. Amazing! I mean like almost instant. I knew my Asus board has something to do with it, but I mean it literally is almost instant.

I still don't like the OS.
Because of? I still want to hear a reason you don't like this besides you haven't spent time to get used to the navigational changes.... It's like when XP came out and I (along with others here that complained about it at that time too) hated it because the control panel was so much different than Win 95.

The whole "feel" of it. It seems to "kiddyish" to me. I don't feel like I have control over the OS. I feel like they tried to simplify it only to make it more complex. As far as repairs go, I dread working with a 8 machine when it comes in. Half of my tools don't work on it. But I do like the boot up time. Like I said if I have to use it I can, do I like it still? No but it works for what I want on that machine.
